A new community hub is now open in Truganina as the Andrews Labor Government continues to invest in Victoria’s fastest growing suburbs.

Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane joined Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly and Wyndham City Council to officially open the Koomail Tardy Community Centre backed by $3 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund and a further $1.715 million from the Building Blocks Grants program.

The Koomail Tardy Centre includes a kindergarten, maternal and child health services and specialist children support services, early childhood education and care, playgroups and parent groups.

With Truganina thought to be named after the Tasmanian Aboriginal woman, Truganini, the Community Centre received a name relevant to the Bunurong people, the Traditional Owners of the land the Centre is located on.

The Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation worked with Wyndham City Council to name the Centre – in the Bunurong language, ‘Koomail’ is the grass used for weaving while ‘Tardy’ means ‘sister’.

Part of the Truganina South East Community Precinct Masterplan Delivery, the Koomail Tardy Centre is a $24 million project delivered by Wyndham City Council in partnership with the Labor Government.

The latest round of the Growing Suburbs Fund is now open for submissions from Victorian councils, with $50 million available to support vital infrastructure projects in the fastest-growing areas around Melbourne.
